New Adriatic/Balkan/Russian theatre for EAW
I've been spending some time trying to work up the Eastern front scenarios started by Jan Tuma (Slovaks, Royal Bulgarian Air Force) for use with Jel's OAW for 1.2.
The big problem is that we have never had a proper Eastern front setup, only a bodged up default map.
So I thought I'd see what could be done to create an Eastern Front setup without having to spend huge quantities of time retiling an entirely new map. Taking the bodging a bit further.
So I took the tile map created by Prune/VonOben which uses Max188's Russia Summer terrain to create a default map without seas or oceans, and using bitmaps, created this new map:
I've retiled the costs and seas, used DOM's and Jel's utilities to flatten the water. I'm currently putting in towns and bases.
The thing is, although the tiled terrain and topography are consistent, it's still the default terrain and topography. Not sure that matters much to players flying over it so long as the seas and coasts are in the right place
In any event, it can be improved as we go along.
Only by making this have I discovered all the various campaigns that could use it, in the Adriatic, the Balkans, and in Russia. Currently adding the US 15th Air Force bases in Fogia Italy, and setting up the Ploesti Romanian oil refineries.
I hope it is easily translateable into 1.6, where it can use Ray's new East Front plane sets to good purpose.

Very nice and when completed I think it will be a big draw because it's something completely new.
As for my project, I've finished the aircraft 3dz models and I'm now working on the flight models. Probably a couple of weeks until finished.
On a side note, I had no idea the Italians fought on the Eastern Front so I'm including some Italian planes in the mix.

The Romanians were also quite heavily involved. There were also Hungarians and Slovaks.

Yeah, I was hoping no one would mention those other countries.
Anyhow, I took a trip over to Talley-ho to see what's available in the way of aircraft from those places and to my horror, Mike removed the "quick links" option.
That was a bad move, and I have no idea why he'd do such a thing because now I'd have to scroll through every member's page to see what's available rather than look at aircraft manufacturers.
Moggy, since you have an ongoing connection with Sandbagger could you see if he could add that option back in?

Happily I find Berchesgarten is on the new map. You can have a go at bombing Hitler's weekend pad.

That is a good list.
I'm near done on initial base/town distribution. Then going back to the map to put in obvious things like the Danube running right through the middle, and urban areas.

While you're at it, which side do I put the Czech planes on?
Wikipedia info says they fought against the Axis until 1941 and then with them. Their planes came from all over the place, Russia, Italy, Great Britain and some of their own designs as well.
It's all quite confusing.

Re: New Adriatic/Balkan/Russian theatre for EAW
Suggest a baseline of:
Allied: Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Greece,
Axis: Slovak, Croatian, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian.
Of course it might get a bit complicated when the Balkan countries were fighting each other (Slovakia and Hungary, Hungary and Romania) or when they swap sides (Romania, Bulgaria). I'll worry about that later.
German, Soviet, Italian, US, and British planes will also be involved in the theatre. But that's a matter of skins.

Re: New Adriatic/Balkan/Russian theatre for EAW
Just finished a Czech S-328.
I have a lo-res Romanian He-112 from Talley-ho that I will use as a skinning guide for my hi-res He-112.
Then I have to finish up the FM's for about 1/2 the new planes and then I'll upload to the GEN for you to take a look at.
At that point you can tell me what's still missing.
