Hi guys,
I went out and got a new video card for this new computer.
(GeForce 5200 256mb PCI)
I currently have a 6200 installed, but this is one of the only ones
that drivers won't fix to run EAW.

I was running a 5200 in my old machine, except it is AGP.

When I put the new card in my machine, I get the startup screen,
a split second of the bios screen, then a windows loading screen
with a load meter, (I'm using Windows Black, so you dont see the
logo or anything, just the meter.) then I get a blank screen. You can
still hear the computer boot up and everything, but the screen is
blank.
With the 6200 card, the boot-up is the same, except after the load meter
you see your mouse pointer, then the desktop.

I have tried several different cards, (after many trips to a few different
computer stores!) and all do the same thing, blank screen. Put the
6200 back in, and all is well again.
Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone experienced this?
Thanks,
AO

Hi AngleOff,

Can you tell us, it is a PCI, or a PCIe video card and motherboard slot.
If it is a PCIe configuration, then it is a shame you did not go for a cheap ATI type card as the drivers are now much better for EAW play.

I suspect you may have to put the 6200 back into the machine, and change the video card settings for driver to "generic VGA".
Then you should be able to swap over to the new video cards and once it loads up fully, you should be able to load in the new video card driver for the 5200.

You may also need to scrub the reg to finish removing the old Nvidia keys, and finish removing the remenants of Nvidia drivers. I use Drive Cleaner Pro, a freebie that does a very good scrub job.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745

Reboot, select plain vga card and driver, then run RCP a few times and thenredo the board drivers. All should work. ALso, ATI cards have a better driver removal system and run EAW a little better. Good luck .
If all else fails, punt. Or, RUN AWAY!!!

Or you could put in the 6200 again, then from; my computer properties (or system properties) hardware profile copy and make a second hardware profile, name it something profile2 or whatever, remove the driver as above and reboot.

Then when you boot you get a choice , use the new profile.

If it all works out then you can then install the new drivers. After all that you can remove the original profile.

In some cases on real old systems you have go into the bios and select PCI and disable AGP, but more likely it is the driver or else you would get bios beeps right after botting.

Syd it has to be PCI as the 5200 was made before PCIe was out in retail.

There were ( I thought) also PCIe versions of the 5200 made.

I went out and got a new video card for this new computer.

As AO said it was a new computer, the chances may be that it is a PCIe rather than a PCI, and he made no mention of it being AGP, which I would have expected him to mention if it was an older generation motherboard..

Always handy to try to get the full information, to avoid mistakes further down the line. :)

Hello,

Just a test to make for know about the card (good or not):
Just start winXP in safe mode.
If your screen still black .. great are the chances the graphic card is out of use.

Now when I shift of a graphic card (yes it's happend some time :) ) :
I deinstall first the driver by the traditional way (windows install-deinstall software option)
After that I run or not a driver cleaner for be certain (but Nvidia no need realy this last operation I never seen a difference .. as they are sweet for deinstall the drivers correctly ... but it's not the case of ATI :) )
A reg clean is not necessary .. as it's performed by the driver cleaner.
After that .. no need to set any VGA mode .. etc.... Windows will automatically set it on the reboot :)
So after the drivers removal is performed stop completely your PC (cut out energy) .... remove you graphic card and put in place the new.
Energise again your PC and start it.
Normally Windows will start and when the desktop will appear .. windows will show a message of graphic card detected... etc...
Cancel all propositions to install the new hardware... and drivers.
After .. launch your own driver install and proceed.
Restart PC and ajust ... your graphics and monitor properties....

Regards.

Hi guys,
I went out and got a new video card for this new computer.
(GeForce 5200 256mb PCI)

Is this the procedure?
Start in safe mode, de-install driver, turn off.
Put in new card, turn on, cancel windows installation,
install new card drivers, re-boot and adjust.

I doubt seriously if the card(s) are bad. I tried to put in 6 different
brand new cards, all gave a blank screen. (But I did not do this
procedure. I just turned off the computer, switched cards and got
nothing.)
My monitor is a Dell 17" flat screen, and I noticed that the driver for it
just says 'Plug and Play Monitor" instead of it's name. Could this also
be a problem? But it does work fine with the 6200.
Anyway, unless I hear different, I will try the procedure above.

Oh yea.... there is also a monitor plug on the motherboard,
but it appears to be disabled, as it does not work even with the 6200.
I tried to plug the monitor into that so I could still get to the desktop
and uninstall the video driver, but.......
Thanks guys,
AO

Okay,
I did the procedure and still got a blank screen.
However, in safe mode, I uninstalled the 6200 drivers
and installed the 5200 drivers. Now, neither card worked!

But in safe mode, I went to device manager, display adapters,
and saw the 5200 and another, VIA/S36 Unichrome Pro 16P.
I disabled that adaptor and re-booted, AND GOT TO MY DESKTOP!
I adjusted the settings and all looks beautiful!

I then installed the XTreme-G driver that worked for EAW on my other
computer with the same card, but was unable to set my desktop to
a good resolution. The original 5200 driver started my settings off at
640x480 and went up to 1280x1024. The XTreme-G started me off at
900x600 and went up to 1200x728, and did not even offer 1024x768.
And even at it's highest setting, my desktop still looked like it was in
640x480 4bit. (Even thou it said it was at the highest setting in 32bit,
it looked no different than 640x480.
I'm going to compare setting options on my other computer. I ran the
other computer in 1024x768. With the regular driver for the 5200,
I'm running in 1280x1024.

When I installed the XTreme-G drivers, the install asked me if I
wanted to overwrite some same name files that were already installed
and newer.........I said yes.......I'll try it again and say no....
Thanks,
AO

Hi AO, did you say that there is a built-in monitor plug on the momma board? Did you make sure that that on-board video is disabled? Because if the machine thinks that it should be using that connection...
Check the boards setup while you are booting, if the inboard isn't disabled do so.

Hi Mike,
I have the 5200 working now........
Now I can't get resolution settings working properly
with a driver that should run EAW.
(I didn't even try to run EAW with the XTreme-G driver,
because my desktop looked so bad.)
I'm gonna do some comparisons on the old computer and see what
I had. Will post.
Thanks,
AO

Okay, I installed the XTreme-G drivers again, and this time
said no when it asked me if I wished to overwrite newer same-name
files. When I re-booted, my desktop had good resolution and offered
the same resolutions that my old computer did.
(It starts at 800x600 and goes up to 1280x1024. Does not offer
640x480, just like my old computer.)

My old computer, when I got to this same point, ran EAW when I
started it the first time, with no error. But this one gives me
the 7217.
Don't know what to try now......?

However, on this computer, I only copied over my EAW root folder.
I believe, on my old computer, I installed it from the CD.
Could this make a difference?
Thanks,
AO

To sum up, I have the 5200 installed and working, and the XTreme-G
driver that has allowed me to run EAW without the 7217 error installed
and working, but am getting the 7217 error anyway. So now I'm
going to make a new EAW install from the CD, patch it to 1.2 or 1.26e,
then see if it will run. Will post back.

Hello,

Try to reinstall DirectX 9.0C (latest) over your existing version (no deinstall directX before run the new version !)
Sometime it's work.(I had already experienced this on my father computer with a 5200)
You must be able to get rid of 7217 with this card with no use of some files like Jelly Jim etc .. !!
For EAW .. the copy-past system is the best instead a install.

Check PM ! :)

try the nvidia 77.77 driver, I have that driver working on a nvidia 5700 VE with no 7217.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.77.html

Your card is supported by it as well as many others:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/77.77_winx ... orted.html

To setup EAW on XP use CleanEAW3;
http://www.sandbaggereaw.com/RafRoy/CleanEAW3.zip

(btw: VIA S36 Unichrome Pro 16P is the motherboard built-in video so that should be disabled, just as you have)
Of course in a pinch you might be able to use it?
