... and talking of computer disasters nearly had my very own this evening. First struggled to update Norto anti-virus, getting nowhere until I discovered it now has a dislike for the firewall programme which consequently had to go. So a breathing space.
Also today I finally picked up "Hidden and Dangerous" a sim I've had my eye on for a while, waiting for it to reach a good price. Saw it for 99p today in the deluxe package with the extra missions, so I coughed up the £1, and didn't get the change because the game shop had run out of 1p peices. Installed it, full install including the mission editor. Then it asked about DX 8.1 which it needed to run the game. Some slight reflection on this, but I remembered that many have posted on the EAW boards to say that they running DX 8.1 with EAW quite happily. So I let it install.
Then restarted computer and troubles began. Would not boot up properly, msgsrv32.exe kept crashing it. Luckily I had Norton zip rescue, though I had not kept the rescue discs properly up to date. None the less I managed to start the sytem with them. Found the offending msgsrv file, and running it through the hex editor discovered it was the file that reported missing system files. So why should that be crashing? Got dxdiag to run and it was reporting 58 necessary DX files missing. Presumably that's why the messeger was crashing - too many missing file messages.
Looked in the Norton protected deleted files bin - and there was a whole host of deleted system files lurking there, delted at the time of the DX8 install. Nothing ventured ... I restored all of them back to the system and other DX folders. Restarted machine and thank god - it booted.
Don't ask me what that was all about. I'm just happy to be working again. Must now update those Norton Zip Rescue files.
Some time will pass before I actually start up H&D and have a look at it!
So here's a beer for Norton's rescue thingy even though their anti virus made me

The next great event will be upgrading W98 to W98SE so that I can get broadband installed and upgrade the video card. Then its upgrading the video card. I'm shaking already at the thought!
