Hi guys,
all is still working okay, but I was getting a little hiccup in my system
with sound, and especially with EAW and my stick. (X52)
Got little stutters while flying, and my stick would sometimes get
stuck with X or Y axis pushed to one side, and I could only remedy this
by unplugging my stick and plugging it back in. And the sensitivity was
very quirky online, but seemed fine offline. I thought it was the test
exe and stuff at the time. (51 and G folders.)
But anyway, I still believe it boils down to the video card and drivers.

When I shut down my system, I hear a windows error sound just before
I hear the windows shut-down music. My system shuts down okay, but
I'm sure there is a bad or conflicting call in the shut-down routine.
(I have the same problem on my old machine, and got it the same way,
adding a new video card and drivers.)

In trying to eliminate the problem, this morning I uninstalled the
XTreme-G drivers, and ran a driver-cleaner program, then re-installed
them. But my problem persisted.
I tried everywhere I could look to see if I could find the error.

I found this in the System Information window you can get from the
extra-help tab in DXDIAG:

The VIA/S3G device is disabled, and I may be wrong, but this gives me
the impression that these two devices information is mingled somehow.
Anyway, I un-installed the drivers for the VIA/S3G......this removed
it from the device manager.

When I re-booted, my STUTTER IS GONE AND MY STICK ACTS GOOD!

However, the information noted above stays the same, and I still get
the error sound on shutdown.
From the System Information, the only errors listed were from some
programs from before I bought the computer, and when I first tried
to run EAW, and from the other night when Gus and I were trying to
set the port-forwarding on my router with the wrong address.

How can I see the shut-down routine, so I can find out what is causing
the error sound?

That can be tricky, it may be just some odd program not exiting , You could look in task manager or use sysinternals.com process explorer at running processes.In Task manager, look at the the applications tab, also processes.Then identify them. use google to search for various names of processes. Usually items that are run by system or local service are parts of windows but not always, they could be parts of programs.
Start first with (other than applications tab) processes run by a user (you should see your computer user name there or administrator) identify them.
Then you could try to turn them off if not needed by either the program's own settings if it has, or a 3rd party tool for stopping programs from starting.
If the cause of the error is the program not terminating, then not starting it (if you don't need it) is an easy way to solve.
As for windows processes it gets quite complex.You can turn those off via computer management console (right click my computer icon , manage) or even other 3rd party tools.But even though many post on internet what you can turn off you will find information is in many cases incorrect.It depends on what you have installed for programs and in windows componenets.Turning off many can often lead to programs not functioning and other oddities.
It is less desirable to do these management functions for most people.
One other thing is a registry cleaner.Maybe the error is by a call from part of a program removed in which case many registry cleaners will fix it by removing.But even that can be a bit tricky.AFAIK fix-it by Vcom http://vcom.avanquest.com/cat/prod.php? ... awodFGo1_A is the best tool.But opinions vary.Many others are good and many more actually bad.

One other thing you can do and I probaly would is per the old 'if not broke don't fix it!' as you risk your entire system for a mere annoying sound before shutdown is either ignore it or search windows folder for *.wav and run the .wavs until you hear the one.It is probaly either error .wav or critical stop .wav.
Then you could record a new blank sound .wav in windows recorder or whatever for that and you never hear it again.
Personaly I turn off all windows sounds.

Hello,

I don't think it will be a non closing programe.
If a programe don't close when you shut down Windows .. a warning will appear with a choice to "wait" or "terminate" the running program.
A registry error still a good option

.. but generally if it's a important error .. you have a message when you start your PC (between the BIO sequence and the desktop sequence......)
"Not broken don't fix it" is a wise advice of course

I get no error message on boot-up or shut-down. :wink:

I am using a registry cleaner from a program called UniBlue Power Suite.
It found 61 problems and fixed them all. (Apparently, it does not like
the NoAdjustPitch registry fix for EAW, as I have the bad brief and
map screens again..... :wink:

)

Indeed .. some registry cleaners are way too much intrusives (this going to the point of no reboot .. hehe...)
Personnaly for daily use ..I utilise CCcleaner (that's free Google it

)..and never problems...
For a more intrusive check .. I utilise Fixit 7Pro ( Vcom .. payware) but never had problems with .. very reliable

Alright, I'm stumped again....... :cry:

As I stated, I un-installed the drivers for the disabled VIA/S3G
and my stutter went away. I have re-booted several times since then
and all was well.
This evening, I went to fly a mission, and remembered that after using
the registry cleaner, my briefing map was scrambled again. So I did the
NoAdjustedPitch registry fix again, and re-booted. My computer went to
the desktop like normal and was still starting my wireless connection and
quick-launch stuff,.....but then the screen went blank for 2-3 seconds,
then came back on, and all seemed normal.
The registry fix did not work, but I flew a mission anyway, and the
game became a slideshow..........I exited.......
I went to Device Manager, and the VIA/S3G was back, and enabled! :shock:

I uninstalled this device, but after a re-boot, it reinstalls and enables
itself! WTF?????????????????

Has anyone experienced a device, after being uninstalled, to come back
and reinstall itself? Maybe because its a motherboard device?

Well it is odd, but possible , I looked up another motherbaord from MSI and in it the onboard video cannot be disabled from the bios, but it was a different model.
SO I was unable to determine if yours has same problem, you would have to look it up at the MSI site

If we think ... but really think at ...

When you disable a device under Windows .. this will happend:
Nothing after you click "apply" .... that's good ..it's disabled !
Or you will have a message like "unable to disable ..needed by operating system or bhla blha .... and you unable to disable.
Your case is .. you was able to disable.. !
Now when you reboot ..it's again enabled (AFAIK)
Have you when reboot a warning of Windows had detected a new hardware/device ? ... I suppose the answer is "NO" ... AFAIK.
But .. nevertheless .. it's enabled again.........
So ... for enable it ..Windows need to find some drivers or at least piece of bits data .. for be able to simply show you the word "enabled" or a box ticked etc .......
I suspect it must be stay behind some crappy pieces of datas in the System32 Windows folder and some nasty register entries....
Remind me your weird sound when you shut down PC

So I think you must investigate in those aeras.
Work with caution when it's with system files .....
Anyways you have the Ultimate boot CD ... so it's more easy tor ecover if you make a mistake.
Just as end advice .. it's eventually good to write down on a paper .. the files you will (maybe) delete... just in case of a no reboot it will be for you more easy to replace them again .......
Hope it's help or at least give you some ideas to put down this annoying problem.

Find it in the registry and kill it. :shock:

Go to Start/Run/ and type in "regedit"
Go to the top bar and pick "Edit/Find in Files"
Type in the name of your nasty proggy. When you find it, delete it.
Hit F-3 until regedit says it can't find any more instances after searching the registry.
